The Inheritance:
This is the story of this strong independent young girl who has been pulled through the looking glass to battle an overlord and find her family and friends. The Other is ruled by fear and an evil ruler bent on killing Reggie and the rebels before they can save their world, the Other, and Reggie's, the Real. Together with her badass guardian and the other rebels they set out to do just that. Reggie while still in culture shock must learn to harness her power and work with the others to free her family and friends. Along the way Reggie finds she no longer needs to be the parent to an alcoholic mother and deal with a school full of bullies which so feels safer to her than the Dark Mage, the mythological creatures and people in the Other.
Will she really be strong enough to save them all ? Will Asher, and the rebels find a way to save the day ? Will she be able to save her family from their prisons ? Can her human mother and her best friend last much longer without help ?
The world though foreign holds believability and complex imaginary, many levels of love and a group of complex characters who are well rounded and have, often tragic, complex backgrounds.
The story does have a few minor curse words and lots of action packed violent events. The book deals with alcoholism, kidnapping, torture and raw emotions. I would say based on the content and the grade level of the vocabulary words that it is best suited for children 14years and up. I, for one, am looking forward to the next book in this well written series.
The Other Queen:
The first book left on a major cliffhanger. This story picks up where the last ended. While the author does a wonderful job of filling the reader in, it is best to read book one first to get the depth of the characters and their intertwined relationships with each other. I like that the characters react emotionally to events in their lives. It is filled with action and romance. The main character, Reggie, is a strong young girl, who has been taking care of her alcoholic mother. Her world is turned upside down when she learns she has some really great powers. This causes the evil from another dimension to want to take it away from her and take other her dimension, too. This book continues with the battle. The plan is to get the leaders and infiltrate the place and give Andrius a one two punch. She must save her family and friends and one who maybe a friend or a foe. Will her head strong ways get her or her friends killed? I can’t wait to see what will happen next.
AUTHOR BIO:
Rebecca Jaycox grew up in the tiny town of Berryman, which borders the Mark Twain National Forest and the Courtois River about 70 miles south of St. Louis. The beautiful landscape fed her imagination, and she began writing stories at age 10 and never stopped. Always seeking adventure, Rebecca moved to France after she graduated college with a journalism degree to teach English at a French high school. Bitten by the travel bug, she has recently visited Italy, Greece, Austria, Spain, and finally made it to her bucket-list destination of Istanbul last summer. Rebecca now lives in New York City with her husband, Gregory. She is the curator and program director of the YA Lit Series at the 92nd Street Y—one of New York’s premier cultural centers. She enjoys reading and writing fantasy, urban fantasy, steampunk, and science fiction. The Other Inheritance is her first novel.
