Blurb:
One accident - a freaking car crash.
That’s all it took to send my brother’s and my life into a tailspin with no end in sight. I was going to be something. I was going to be the best. I had the Olympics in my sights. And it all went to shit in one flash. Brayden wasn’t ready to raise a younger sister when I was thrown into his lap. He had his life and everything going for him. Thankfully, he was still drafted to his dream hockey team. The same one dad played for when we were growing up.
It took time, but I started to get better, started to open up, started skating and even dating again. I even thought I found the perfect guy for me.
Isn’t it funny how guys hit on you when they know you’re not available, but when you’re single they won’t give you the freaking time of day? I guess the game is more fun that way. And for the captain of my brother’s team, that’s exactly what I was. A hat trick is three goals in hockey. Some say three is a crowd and they might be right.
I was Gavin Hayes' unobtainable goal.

REVIEW

[Janet]
Amazon/Goodread's Rating: 4/5
In Patti's Imagination Rating:  9/10

Told through the eyes of the three main characters, Hat Trick gives the reader a deeper understanding of the story and the character's' mindset as they weave through their lives.   This is a book about a brother and sister, Myla and Brayden Cox. They have not had an easy life.  Dreams were shattered in this second chances  story.  While not the type of second chances story you maybe thinking, it has a lot of angst moments that make it a quick page turner.
Myla is about to graduate high school and head towards the Olympics as an ice skater.  Her brother, Brayden, has made the Otters hockey team despite their father's actions tarnishing the Cox name.  Tragedy strikes the Cox family once again and this accident destroys Myla’s dreams.
Gavin Hayes has reached team captain despite his father being the manager for the Otters.  Gavin doesn't have the best of father and son relationship.  Gavin’s life is going great.  His dreams seem to be coming true, until his fiance stands him up at the altar making him give up on relationships and happy endings.  Gavin's life is turned upside down when he meets his teammate's sister, Myla, and it would have to be the one teammate that he doesn’t get along with.  Will Gavin and Myla overcome the obstacles of their families and the baggage of their pasts to survive as a couple?  Can their shattered dreams ever be mended?
As I said, this is not your typical second chance story about love, it is about second chances with life.  Myla was given that second chance when she survived that accident that took her mother’s life. With the encouragement and loving support of her brother, still took her two years from that accident to start to live again.  It was great to see what a close bond these siblings have, even when they don’t agree with each other.
As close of a relationship that Brayden and Myla have, Gavin and his parents are the total opposite.  The way they would treat him made me want to jump into the book just to yell at them to let him be his own person.  The reaction Gavin has, when he first meets Myla and later helps Brayden out with a situation, show that Gavin can change and have his second chance especially after the person he thought was it for him walks out on him.

I loved how the author told this story in the points of view of Myla, Brayden and Gavin.  It helped the story flow and was a necessary tool to tell this story.  This is the first book I have read by this author and it will not be my last.  I have debated on how to write this review because it is a quicker read than I am used to and it not being a typical romantic second chances plot.  I'm really hoping that Brayden will have his own story.  We were able to get to know him in Hat Trick, but there is more to him and I also feel like Gavin and Myla have more to them, as well, which is one of the reasons for my four star rating.  There were several unanswered questions for me and I would have much preferred the book to have been longer than having the annoying sneak peaks of other books.
