EXCERPT

The bright light of the moon shone through the little window above the bed of Sascha and Eduard Engel, illuminating the tiny room where they slept. Eduard breathed deeply, lost in the world of sleep as his sister lay quietly next to him. She stared at the sky through the glass, the tiny flakes of snow gently falling from heaven. She twirled an oval, bronze pendant in her fingers and smiled. She remembered her mother. Her mama had always told her that snow was God’s way of sending little pieces of heaven to his people on earth so they would remember Him. Sascha missed her.

Her mother had been gone for almost six weeks. The soldiers in the black and silver uniforms had taken her away. Mama had made them hide under the floors and told them to not make a sound. The soldiers broke through the door and Sascha remembered hearing the glass as it smashed against the wooden planks above her head. She closed her eyes, the tiny shards slipping through the spaces of the floorboards as they fell against her face. She heard her mother yelling at the soldiers and felt Eduard grasp her hand. Then she heard his voice. Sascha opened her eyes when she heard that voice. It was different from the others. She remembered how it cut into her soul like a knife through a potato. It hurt her. She had felt Eduard’s hand tighten. It must have hurt him too. The soldier argued with her mother and they began to yell. Suddenly, Sascha heard the smack and a great thud above her head. She saw her mother’s eye looking down at her for only a moment before it was yanked away.

EXCERPT

“Dani-girl.”  His voice, that rich rumble of masculine excellence, washes over me and I shiver again before cursing under my breath.  The rumble of his low laughter tells me that he definitely didn’t miss that little move.
Kill me now.
“Hey, Coh,” I say with a smile.  “What brings you in?  Last minute, I might add.”  I pat the chair before walking around and holding the back while he sits down.
When his scent hits my nose, I almost come on the spot.  Lord, he smells good.  I wonder what he would smell like while his body covered mine, all sweaty from hours of good lovemaking.  I run my fingers through the longer lengths on the top and feel my cheeks heat slightly, thinking about doing the same when his face is buried between my legs.
“…needed a trim.”
Shit.  I missed what he said because, naturally, I was thinking about him naked.  Naked and thrusting into my body.  Naked and feasting between my spread thighs.
“You feeling okay?  I thought Nate said you were better?”
“Uh, I’m fine.  Just—is it hot in here?”  I fan my face and avoid his eyes.
He’s silent, so I take that as a sign that it’s safe to bring my attention back to him.
Big mistake there.  His knowing eyes are boring right into mine.  The chocolate depths sparkling in a way that makes it clear he has a good idea about where my mind was going.
“Did you hear what I said, Dani-girl?”
“Of course I did, Cohen.  What, did you think I was standing here daydreaming?” I joke.
“Well, yeah, that’s exactly what I think.”  His eyes darken and he smirks a devilish grin.  “Did you know you talk in your sleep, Dani?” he asks, and I drop my comb.
Oh, God.  Shut up, shut up, shut up.  This is not happening.  No way.
“No, I don’t,” I childishly snap.
“Dani, you do.  So, yeah, I do think you were standing there daydreaming.  Want to know why?”  He uses his booted foot to move his chair so that he’s facing me, and then he leans in so that his face is dangerously close to mine.  Even when he’s seated, his head is almost level with my own.  Curse my horizontally challenged self.  “While you were zoning off into space with your fingers running through my hair, you had this smile on your lips.  The same smile you had the other day when you were dreaming.  About me, Dani.  And don’t deny it, because you don’t moan my name if you’re dreaming about another man.  Yes, Dani, you very much do talk in your sleep.”  He smiles again before leaning back and looking down to his phone.  “Clean up my neck please, cut the length off the top, and give me a buzz on the sides.  Other than that, you’re clear to continue with your thoughts.”
I must have been standing there like an idiot because he looks up from his phone, laughs to himself, and, with one tan hand, reaches out and pushes my mouth closed.
“You’re going to catch flies that way, Dani-girl.  One day, maybe you can clue me in on what those dreams are about.”
Drives me insane, the control he has over me.  There isn’t a single person in the world, other than Cohen, who can turn me into a ridiculously stupid, sputtering fool.  My normal confidence disappears.  And clearly, he isn’t as oblivious to my feelings as I originally thought.
How in the hell am I supposed to handle this?
Wait a minute.  Cohen or not, I’m not going to let him pull my strings when I know he is just doing this to make me feel uncomfortable.
So, time to call his bluff.
“Why?  You planning on doing something about it?”
He looks up sharply, clearly not having expected me to actually say something in return since he was going for shock value.
“Try me,” he demands, his voice thick and even deeper than normal.
I throw my head back and reach out to run my fingers thought his hair again, just barely suppressing the shivers.  Curling my fingers slightly so that I can grab a good hold, I lean in and pull his head back at the same time.  With my nose just a hair away from his and our breaths mingling together, I say, “Cohen, you couldn’t handle the truth of my thoughts when it comes to you and we both know it.  So how about you let me know when you’re ready for me to clue you in.”  I give his hair a light tug and smile when he swallows loudly and shifts in his seat.  “Ready for that trim?” I ask with a wink, and I’m rewarded with his groan.
I have no idea how I do it, but I manage to get through his cut without coming unglued.  I can see Lyn trying to get my attention from across the room.  Stella had to leave after she overheard my words to Cohen because her giggles were getting the best of her.  Cohen has remained silent the whole time.  His eyes though…  They’re speaking louder than his words ever could.
They haven’t left my reflection in the mirror since I started.  I can feel them every time I shift.  When I stopped to go grab another comb after I dropped my fourth one, I felt his gaze follow me across the room to Stella’s station.  The few times I stopped cutting to meet his eyes, the heated promise written all over his face almost did me in.  I almost just said ‘fuck it’ and climbed on his lap to have a go regardless of the people watching our every move.
I finish the last buzz of my clippers around his right ear and move to brush all the stray hair off.  “All done,” I say softly and unclip his cape.
He stands, shoving his phone in the back pocket of his jeans, and walks over to stand in front of me.  I continue to pretend I’m busy with the cape I just removed, brushing stray hairs off here and there, when his hand comes up, his finger and thumb hitting my chin, and my face is lifted until I have no choice but to look in his eyes.
“Do not tease me, Dani.  It’s not a game you want to play if you don’t intend to follow through.”
“I-I wasn’t… I wouldn’t,” I stammer.
“You did, and I have no doubt you’ll have the brilliant idea to do it again.  The next time you allude to those dirty thoughts I know you have about me, don’t think for a second that I won’t drag you to the closest bed to show you just how fucking dirty they’ll get.”  He leans close, his scent hitting my nostrils, and I involuntarily inhale deeply, earning me a rumbled chuckle.  “What you don’t know, Dani—because contrary to what you think, you don’t know me well enough to assume what having me would really be like.  But I promise you this: every little thought that you have had that causes you to moan my name while scissoring those perfect legs back and forth, praying for completion—it would be so much hotter than you could ever imagine.”  He gives me a soft, sweet kiss against my temple that has fire racing from that spot all over my body until it ends in the awareness that I’m pretty sure I just came in my pants.

Amazon/Goodreads rating: 5/5

How would you feel if this happened to you? I had something similar happen to me. My husband was actually someone I grew up with and had been in love with for a few years before he even dared to look at me. Yeah, three years younger then him and he hadn't paid much attention to the girl making googly eyes at him.

Reading about Cohen, the little man we all fell in love with in the Corps Security series, was truly amazing. Hell, I want him to be real. He kinda is, in my mind.

Axel, oh Axel. Love the growls. HA! That was an awesome detail. Now I wonder what Maddox will feel when his girls start dating. Damn! That is gonna be hard on him.

Dani is exactly the girl I would picture being a daughter to Axel and Izzy Reid. She has enough sass and is also crazy in love with the one boy that stole her heart. Much like her mother.

This story is just about love, as it has always been with Harper and her writing. Yeah, there is some suspense, but everything works out in the end and that's what's important. For me, this story had so much more then what everyone else see. I read it and remembered just how lucky I am to have love in my life. My family, my children, my husband. It's the most important thing there is.

REVIEW

[Anita]
Amazon/Goodreads rating: 5/5
In Patti's Imagination rating: 10/10

Where to start with explaining to you what I read in these stories? I'll start from the first.

I read Back To December last year and their story was beautiful and sweet. The kind of love you want to find in your life. Rob and Em are two genuinely beautiful people with scars and problems, but working through them together.

Only One - this story I was afraid to read because I knew from the first book it would be a heart breaker, and even when my heart broke I still read it. I didn't like Liam but I read. He grew on me by the end. Not his biggest fan but I loved the story, the ending, the happily ever after. I'm a sucker for that kind of thing.

Right Here Waiting - Now I don't want to have a favorite in this boxed set but I just can't help it. I love Neil and I can't help falling in love with the man he is. No matter that I'm married and happily so, Neil could steal me away anytime he wants.

This Year's Love - I loved this story and is probably my second favorite, right after Neil. I loved it because Lucy made me love them. They have made mistakes and they realized it, they made up for it. I loved that I was able to see them and not be mad for the things they did. I wasn't so mad before, but it was still nice to see things in their perspective.

Not to get too long on this review. Looking forward for reading more of these and since I know Lucy, I know she has sooooo much more up her sleeve, and more men for me to fall in love with. Yes, I can keep these guys in there too. I have enough of a big heart, or imagination. Hahahahaha

EXCERPTS/TEASERS

Back to December

Emily looked at Rob and couldn't read what he was thinking. She could tell there was something on his mind, but she had no clue what it was.

“Care to share?” she asked, curious.

“Can I kiss you?” he replied, his voice steady.

Em was stunned. She didn't know what to say. It had been over five years since she had been asked to be kissed. She nodded slowly, so as not to appear too eager, though she was, in fact, dying to kiss him. She had been looking at his mouth quite a bit these last few hours, and it always seemed so kissable.

Rob leaned toward her, and she met him halfway. That heady forest scent invaded her nostrils more thoroughly now and her brain swam. He looked at her with a sweet smile, just a little grin that said he was looking forward to this. She met his eyes and his smile with one of her own, though she suspected that, as soon as he'd asked, he'd known what her answer would be by the expression on her face.

His lips brushed against hers, gentle at first, with just a little bit of pressure. The gesture implied respect without stifling the desire that raced through Emily's blood. Her skin heated and the dampness between her thighs, which had been present since dinner, bordered on embarrassing. How could she want someone so much from just a simple kiss?

Only One

They walked back to the car, hand in hand, in an unusual silence. Jenna started to step around the car to the passenger's side, and Liam tightened his grip on her hand so she couldn't let go. Her expression said she was curious as he drew her toward him and leaned against the car hood. She let him guide her until her body was pressed against his and their faces were inches apart.

His heart raced again, which Liam found odd – he hadn't felt nervous before he kissed a girl since junior high. Swallowing hard, he brushed the hair from her face like he'd done earlier. Her breath hitched, and he knew she wanted him to kiss her as much as he wanted to do it. He looked at her mouth, then into her eyes. They leaned in at the same time, crushing their lips together in a long-overdue kiss.

Heat rushed through his body and his dick hardened before she even slid her tongue into his mouth. As their tongues danced, one hand found her ass and pulled her pelvis to his, while the other threaded into her hair, bringing her mouth closer, and deepening the kiss. She whimpered and gripped his neck.

The kiss lasted a few minutes and then they needed air. They leaned apart, touched foreheads, their breath labored.

“Wow,” Jenna whispered.

“Yeah. I agree,” Liam said.

Right Here Waiting

Meghan stared back at him as intently. Finally, she said, “What's going on here, Neil?”

“What do you mean?

“This. What's happening between us? Am I reading you wrong? Are you not interested in me?”

Neil couldn't let her think that. No. Never. He'd wanted her for too long to let her ever believe he wasn't interested, even for a moment. He pulled back, stood still and looked at her. He looked at her mouth. He wanted to kiss her, but if he waited until they were alone, she might give up on him. Danny was right, he had to stop sabotaging this.

Neil threaded his hands in her sun-kissed hair. In her eyes, he saw a desire to kiss him as powerful as his own. He leaned in, pressed his lips to hers and a wave of heat washed over him. Meghan leaned into the kiss, opening her lips, and as he slid his tongue into her mouth, Neil had to use every ounce of restraint his military training had afforded him to keep it from getting indecent.

Meghan pulled away and saved Neil from himself.

This Year's Love

“Are you okay?” she asked.

He nodded slowly and swallowed.

“Uh huh,” he muttered.

His dilated pupils said he liked what he saw. She grinned. In two strides of his long legs, he was right next to her and it was Annie's turn to gasp – he towered over her.

He looked at her, shook his head, then he crushed her to his body, his face a breath away. She opened her mouth and his tongue plunged inside. Unlike the other morning, he knew this was her and not Em. Yet, he kissed her with even more passion, stealing her air.

Before she knew what was happening, he lifted her off the ground, wrapped her legs around his waist and carried her to the bed. They collapsed onto the mattress, and when his pelvis pressed into her core, they moaned in unison.

“God, you're beautiful,” he breathed around her lips.

AUTHOR BIO

As a child, Lucy Gage relished time to use her imagination, whether it was playing with her siblings - dolls, cars and trucks, make believe, LEGOs - or reading a book. That still translates today, as she writes the stories bouncing through her head, or reads the work of others. Her two imaginative children play the same way she did in her youth and love to read. She considers this her greatest accomplishment to date.

Married for the past dozen years, she and her family live in rural Maine. When not at the keyboard, she most enjoys gardening, hiking, amateur photography, the beach, dancing, crafts, ice skating, snow shoeing, boating and of course, reading.

This book is about a man who lives in London and drives a truck. When we first meet "Z" he has just gotten word that his wife wants a divorce. She believes that he will always be a truck driver and will never amount to anything. He actually has a law degree. Some friends of his decide that he should join some Internet dating sites, and that is really where all the fun begins. Some of the things that happen to him are laugh out loud funny. With a co-worker he goes to Scotland to stay at a lodge. There he meets Penny and they become friends. Penny gets him to try some of the Internet dating sites and report back to her what happens. I was gifted this book for a fair and honest review.

EXCERPT

When first I met my now estranged wife during our Master’s year at university, I was seeing someone else too. In the main, this defines me as a “bastard”, although I preferred to think of myself as a “player”. Indeed I would argue that it falls under the guise of “sowing wild oats”. That’s the phrase that makes the practice somehow acceptable, and mothers the world over tell their sons that this is what they need to do before they settle down. The rite of passage into manhood as it were. At least, it’s what my mother told me. Women may argue this point - sorry, women will argue this point - but then they become mothers.
Naturally, they just don’t want those “wild oats” sown with their own daughters.
However, it is a fallacy to think that we men are completely heartless. I realised that I actually liked the girl that I eventually married so quickly ended all contact with the third party. In actual fact, she was a girl that I had been seeing first but only by a matter of a few weeks. I got the usual tirade of “bastard” texts, emails, and drunken voicemails. “I thought you were different” being the obligatory phrase that she just had to use during every one of these “opportunities”. In one particular instance, during which she also branded me a “coward”, I foolishly responded. I explained to her that I was merely being cruel to be kind as it was blatantly obvious to me that there we had no future together. Furthermore, after everything that had been said and done – more on her part now than mine - she would surely realise and accept that there was no going back as any trust and respect that had been built was now completely shattered.
I got the following reply:
“See, I knew you were different. That was lovely, you thinking of me and my feelings and us and our future. Why can’t we make this work? We can, you just have to trust yourself to trust me. Call me.”
It took another six weeks of ignoring and blocking her before she finally gave up. We had only been dating, if it could ever have been called that, for three weeks.
It takes true courage and bravery to finish any relationship. As my marital separation was only a week old, I understood that there may be some element of hope that we could fix it and move on. Yet I knew there was no way I could, or would, allow myself to stoop to such a level of indignity. My sense of pride has taken a pounding and is undoubtedly battered and bruised, but it is still there, standing tall and intact, however weakly. It is also getting stronger with every passing day.
All thanks to “Hope”.
“Hope” is a very strange feeling that displaces others such as “confidence”, “faith”, and “trust” and one that I have naturally gravitated towards my entire life. We are old friends, hope and I. Never have I dared to have “confidence” in my academic or sporting abilities, rather I always “hoped” that I would perform at my best as necessitated in any particular circumstance. When things had gone better than I had even dared “hope”, then I defaulted to the notion that is was merely my “good luck”, and vice versa. “Luck” has always provided me an excuse for all of life’s highs and lows and everything in between. Now I wanted to change all that. Now I wanted to control my existence.
Now I wanted to stir the stagnant pool that is my life proactively to feel like I am living again.
So that may well explain why I am now sat in only my boxer shorts in front of my computer, as the rain batters the window behind my curtains, and trying to focus on completing an online dating profile that includes a “personal statement” section. Apparently, its purpose is to allow me to describe myself in as broadly generic terms as possible in order to seem “normal” and “average” - and so maximising my appeal - whilst also trying to ensure that I am unique enough as to stand out. The logic of the concept is irrefutable and yet fantastically ridiculous.
It is also proving so challenging to the point of being quite impossible.
As a truck driver, I work most weekends and so this job commitment removes the more conventional ways of meeting women. Using a dating site makes far more sense in this new age of technology as it allows for an immediate connection without the need to wait for the weekend, or the demand of a decent chat up line. It cuts to the chase, so to speak. The site has posted a statistic that states over 28% of couples now “meet” online, so I am still happily in the minority. However, it is utterly galling to me that I should ever try to be “normal” or “average” to anyone as I have never considered myself as such.
It seems to me to be morally fraudulent.
Online dating. It really is quite an absurd concept yet totally in concert with the modern era where people are too busy with work and life to take the time and make the effort for actually dating. Yet where is the romance of it? You will never hear a love song that refers to such sites. Can you imagine Rod Stewart singing “The Algorithm of my Heart”, or some such like?
No? Me neither.

After graduating with a couple of useless degrees in law, I left my Scottish homeland and wandered nomadically around the globe to experience the rich diversity of culture that the world has to offer.

Synopsis
Killian Bosch knows he’s his own worst enemy – he just doesn’t give a damn. The star forward of a minor league hockey team, he’s unstoppable on the ice. His reckless behavior, devil-may-care attitude and complete disregard for consequences have made him a major source of headaches for the Fenway Flyers’ brass. But the new Flyers owner is more steel than brass. Sidney Stahl is a disciplined woman who parlayed earnings from a college job into a real estate empire. She’s determined to transform the Flyers from marketing nightmare to hockey powerhouse. Once she gets Killian in line, she knows the rest of the team will follow his lead.
The seduction of his sexy new team owner is a challenge too forbidden for Killian to resist. Sidney plays into his attraction as a means of controlling him, but soon finds that she’s the one surrendering. It’s all on the line as Killian and Sidney are forced to choose - business or pleasure?

Amazon/Goodreads rating: 5/5
In Patti's Imagination rating: 10/10

I absolutely loved the Fire on Ice series, and I'm a huge hockey fan, so I expected to enjoy the first book in Brenda's ON THE LINE series. What surprised me was how easily Killian Bosch managed to push every sexy button and draw me into his orbit the same way he does Sidney. Though I loved all the Fire on Ice stories, my favorite was Edge. There was something about Luke that appealed to me on many levels, maybe even including the reformation of a bad boy. Killian now ties with Luke and Ben (Now and Again, Now and Forever) as my favorite of Brenda's leads. The rest of the guys in On the Line will have to work extra hard to knock Killian from his post of best in this series.

Sidney was fabulous. One thing I loved about her was that, in spite of what she does give up for Killian, she never compromises her sense of self. He enriches her already great life, fills it more, rounds her edges, but never changes the fundamentals of who Sidney is. For her part, Sidney helps Killian get back to the place where he fell off his axis, but she doesn't demand it or even ask him to be better for her. He wants that, and there is nothing sexier than a man who knows how to love with his whole self. Add a dirty mouth and a woman who can't say no to him (and doesn't want to), and you've found a great combination of hot and sweet.

Another home run for Brenda that leaves me excited for this next series and a little less disappointed to say goodbye to the boys of Fire on Ice.

Excerpt
My mind was jerked back to the present when I became aware the coach had moved on from his teaching lesson.

“The new owner’s upstairs watching practice,” Orion announced, giving us the evil eye. We all looked up in the direction of the owner’s box, but I couldn’t see anyone standing inside. Orion turned to Bruce, the Flyers assistant coach, and spoke in a voice loud enough that no one could miss what he was saying, “Bruce, did we not have a meeting with the new owner before practice this morning?” Bruce nodded his agreement. “Tell me if I remember this right, Bruce.” Orion continued. “Did she tell us this team will be undergoing some major changes? That we’ll be making cuts and bringing in new talent?”

“That’s right, Coach,” Bruce said in an even tone. Sighs and shuffling from around me indicated nervousness. I had nothing to worry about. I was the captain of the team and probably the best player here, though Bennett was a very close second. But the idea of cutting the dead weight got my attention. I was as disgusted as Orion with the record of our team. It was fucking embarrassing. He’d been brought in by the new ownership to turn things around and it sounded like that was about to happen.

“I’ve been here two weeks,” he said. “I’ve given all of you a chance to show me you want to be on this team. Starting today, there’ll be one on one meetings between some of you and the new owner. Later on, Bruce and I will talk to each of you individually to let you know who’s staying and who’s going. Now back to the fucking play, boys.” As we turned to get back in line, Orion called Liam’s name. “You’re up first with the owner,” he said. “You know where her office is?”

My head swiveled to look at Orion. Her? The new owner was a woman? Fucking hell. A woman wouldn’t be able to make the tough decisions this team needed to recover from its place at the bottom of the league. And what about Liam? He was a quiet, solid player on the first line. What the hell did the new ownership want with him? I wanted to go with him to that meeting, but that was never going to happen. Liam skated over to the bench and I glanced back up at the owner’s box, glowering. Anybody who fucked with Liam was also fucking with me. I had nothing to lose, and a man with nothing to lose was never someone you wanted to fuck with. Especially not by some woman who thought she could overhaul this team and turn things around. Others had tried and failed. She would be no different.
